What We Offer
Delivering on the promise of stem cells will involve an international effort divided among many stem cell institutes.
Working with Others
Stem cells are a relatively new science - our aim is to become one of the top stem cell science centres in the world and to work in partnership with other top centres in the US, Europe, Australia and Asia. We plan to build on our knowledge of successful stem cell therapies to design treatments arising from stem cell science for many other diseases. We also hope that, if we are able to grow tissues outside of the human body, they could be used to help develop and test new drugs.
Future Stem Cell Study
Our strengths lie in a first rate clinical environment for both research and treatment, our knowledge and understanding of translating stem cell therapies into clinical practice, our longstanding investigations into the properties and potential of adult stem cells, our pioneering work with stem cells from umbilical cord blood and our recent advances in embryonic stems cells and steps towards therapeutic cloning through nuclear transfer. The challenge is to link scientific advances so closely with medicine that progress can be made over the next decade. This is a new kind of endeavour.
In the next few years we aim to begin therapeutic stem cell trials for treatment of corneal damage, blood diseases, wound healing and diabetes. Planning and conducting these trials will require careful consideration of ethical issues. It is for this reason that ethical discussion and public engagement is a key element of our approach.
