Project Details:

ENDOGENOUS NEUROGENESIS IN THE ADULT HUMAN BRAIN : PATHOLOGIES AND PHARMACOLOGIES.

As part of the Dementia and Neurodegenerative Diseases Group within the Institute of Ageing and Health,we are researching the role of endogenous neurogenesis in the human brain. Based on invaluable collections of brain tissue from patients with dementia, we are exploring a range of markers of proliferation, migration and integration in the neurogenic niche areas. Diseases under investigation include Alzheimer's , Lewy body dementia and vascular dementia and comparisons are made with matched controls and also within these groups between subgroups treated and not treated with anti dementia drugs. These studies in Newcastle are closely linked in collaboration with others in the Centre for Age Related Diseases Unit at King's College, London (including Clive Ballard, Antigoni Economou and Pat Doherty . This research is currently supported by the Dunhill Trust and Rosetrees Trust'
