Our Research

The Stem Cell Institute is a flagship regional endeavour. It brings together scientists and clinicians in Durham and Newcastle Universities and in NHS Hospital Trusts.

It is unusual in combining research on embryonic stem cells with research into somatic and umbilical cord blood stem cells. Our increasing understanding of stem cell biology is opening up new possibilities for clinical treatment: our close relationship with the NHS and in particular with the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will facilitate the introduction of stem cells into clinical practice.

It is intended that the Institute’s commitment to practical outcomes will contribute to the region’s economic growth. One NorthEast, the regional development agency, is a major partner in the Institute and has provided substantial funding to permit the preparation of stem cells to therapeutic standards. Under the banner of Newcastle and Durham regional partnership, the Institute will continue to grow as a premier international institute of stem cell science.
