Stem Cells and Shopping
Scientists to meet with shoppers at Metro Centre
It’s not what you’d normally expect on a weekend shopping trip but shoppers at the Metrocentre will have the chance to meet scientists working in the field of stem cells and learn more about the potential of these super cells.
Over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd October, scientists from Newcastle and Durham Universities along with science explainers from the Centre for Life, will be discussing some of latest developments involving stem cells and their use in medical practice.
Ian Simmons, Director of Science Communications at the Centre for Life, said: “Stem cells are a difficult concept to convey but this event includes lots of hands-on activities so members of the public will be able to gain a good grasp of the subject and come away with an understanding of the significant role the North East is playing.”
Activities include the chance to see what life is like as a research scientist in a mock ‘Clean room’, dressing up in lab clothing and practising laboratory skills. Younger shoppers will also get the chance to make a cell in a Petri dish to take home.
Helen Clamp, manager of the Newcastle-Durham stem cell research initiative NESCI, said: “It’s important that we, as scientists, explain what we are doing to the public and involve them in discussions about the potential of stem cells. We’re excited about the stem cell event at the Metrocentre and looking forward to chatting to shoppers and hearing their opinions.”
The Stem Cell weekend will take place in the Lower Yellow Mall, near Argos from from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 2nd and from 11am to 5pm on Sunday 3rd October.
