Our Facilities

NESCI’s partners have invested heavily in new laboratories and other facilities in recent years.

Laboratories

Our scientists are currently based in state-of-the art labs in three centres:

  • The Centre for Life in Newcastle hosts a number of teams working on embryonic, germline and adult stem cells (including stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood). Our Bio-manufacturing facility and FACS facilities and management team are also based here.
  • Durham University's Science Park hosts the teams who work at the Schools of Chemistry and Biological Sciences on a range of adult stem cells.
  • Newcastle University's Medical Sciences Faculty hosts teams working on cancer stem cells, cord blood and other adult stem cells.

Scientist in laboratoryOther Facilities

Our 'Bio-manufacturing facility' has been specially built, with the support of One NorthEast and the Medical Research Council, to give us the capacity to grow stem cells to the quality needed for them to be put into people. The facility is run by a dedicated team with decades of experience in bio-manufacturing between them.

We have a number of other specialist facilities, including an extensive Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) facility, run by a dedicated team of two, including an expert with 25 years of experience and a flow specialist who also has PhD and post-doctoral experience working in stem cells.

To find out more about any of these facilities, e-mail us: office@nesci.ac.uk
